The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has opened applications for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027, offering 127 vacancies across scientific and technical Group A and Group B posts. Candidates can apply online until September 22, 2026, at 6:00 PM.

The recruitment covers Geologist, Chemist, Assistant Geologist, Assistant Geophysicist, Assistant Chemist, Scientist ‘B’, Assistant Hydrogeologist and related positions in the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). Most posts require a relevant master’s degree in geology, geophysics, chemistry or an allied discipline.

UPSC will conduct the selection in three main stages. The Preliminary Examination is scheduled for January 10, 2027, while the descriptive Main Examination will take place on June 19 and 20. Candidates qualifying the Main Examination will progress to the Personality Test/Interview.

The largest number of vacancies is for Assistant Geophysicist and Assistant Geologist posts in GSI. The notified vacancy distribution is as follows:

Age Limit

Candidates must generally be between 21 and 32 years of age as on January 1, 2027. This means applicants should have been born not earlier than January 2, 1995, and not later than January 1, 2006.

Upper-age relaxation will apply to eligible categories according to the applicable rules.

UPSC Geo-Scientist Preliminary Exam Pattern

Stage I is an objective-type Preliminary Examination carrying a total of 400 marks. It consists of two papers, with General Studies common to all streams and a separate subject paper based on the candidate’s stream.

The question papers are in English. For an incorrect answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as negative marking.

Main Examination Pattern

Candidates qualifying the Preliminary Examination will progress to Stage II, which consists of three descriptive/conventional papers in the relevant stream.

The Main Examination papers are answered in English. Non-programmable pocket calculators are permitted.

Selection Process

The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist selection process carries a total of 1,200 marks across its three principal stages:

1. Preliminary Examination – 400 marks
2. Main Examination – 600 marks
3. Personality Test/Interview – 200 marks

Candidates clearing the prescribed Main Examination requirements will be called for the Personality Test. There are no minimum qualifying marks prescribed for the interview. Final merit is based on the aggregate marks secured across the three stages.

Document verification and the applicable medical examination requirements will also form part of the recruitment process.

2. Create an account and complete the Universal Registration Number (URN) profile if applying through the system for the first time.
3. Complete the Common Application Form with the required personal and academic information.
4. Upload the prescribed documents and signature and complete the required live photograph process.
5. Select the Examination Specific Module for “Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027.”
6. Pay the ₹200 application fee online if the fee applies to your category.
7. Review the information entered in the application before final submission.
8. Submit the form no later than 6:00 PM on September 22, 2026.
